A day in the life of... Mistral's Graphic Designer

Hi, I’m Amelia. I’ve been working as Mistral’s Graphic Designer for about a year now and have been loving it! So here’s a little bit about me and what my job entails.

A Bit About Me

Current favourite TV programme? I’m a little bit addicted to the US Office at the moment!

Current favourite smartphone apps? I’m always on Instagram – whether uploading my own snaps or getting outfit, holiday or homeware inspiration.

The ideal way to start my day is… a lie in, snuggled up with my dogs with a brew in hand.

Cats or dogs? Dogs all the way!

What are your hobbies outside of work? I’m a very keen photographer – particularly landscapes and a little bit of portraiture.

About My Role

What is your background, how did you get into your career? Not to sound cliche, but I have always had a love of drawing and creating. I discovered graphic design through a work experience placement and fell in love with it! I graduated from Solent University in 2017 with a degree in Media, Culture and Production where I specialised in graphic design and photography. I was very easily persuaded to stay and complete my Masters in Creative Enterprise, and graduated in July this year.

A bit about your position and what you do on a day to day basis: As a graphic designer, I am in charge of the overall look and branding of the company. My roles vary from working on web graphics and email designs to working on printed point of sales and designing window displays. Each day brings something a little bit different.

What are the most important tools, programmes or systems for your work? I am always using one (or three) Adobe Creative Cloud programmes, which is not good for my Mac speed!

What is the first thing you do when you get into work? A cup of tea is always a good first port of call, swiftly followed by checking my emails to make sure no jobs have come in from stores that need to be prioritised.

What makes you happy during the day? You can’t beat working with a great team of people, and we have a particularly lovely team in HQ.

What do you like best about your job? I get to do what I love day in day out!

What do you like the least about your job? Some days we can all get a creative block, this comes in handy when I need to get on top of the admin side of things, but not so great if there’s a project deadline looming.

Are there lots of challenges in your job? How do you handle them? Working in a fast paced environment can sometimes mean that there is a very tight turnaround for graphics – it’s important to prioritise!

What advice would you give to someone who is seeking the same line of work? Get all the experiences you can, practice your craft but most importantly, have confidence in your work – it will show!
